Children crave interaction with something or someone, and in today’s world, it’s common to see parents give their children an iPad® or a smartphone for entertainment purposes. And although the games and videos children love to play and watch may be educational, research suggests that reading, and reading aloud to your children, is best. It may be more beneficial to you and your child to simply read a book together. One might think that talking with children or letting them watch TV while you both talk about your day suffices, but research suggests otherwise. Pediatrician Dr. Annie Zimmer says, “Talking to your toddler or baby a lot is very important, but reading provides more diverse word exposure and allows for complexity of vocabulary, language skills and sentence structure.”
Let your child choose a book for story time. He or she may need your assistance for choosing a book with large text and colorful pictures. Reading to young children has a major impact on their literacy skills, and they may even develop good reading habits later on in life. If you are reading to your infant, Dr. Zimmer notes that very young children don’t have to necessarily follow the plot, but just the act of reading out loud does make a positive impact on a child’s ability to enjoy reading later in life.
Staying focused for more than a few minutes at a time may be difficult with children as young as three. Maybe start with five minutes, and then gradually move up to ten minutes, depending on the child’s interest in that book. Some parents find that young children like to jump from book to book during story time, and that’s fine. The repetition and habit of reading daily will form lifelong stability and confidence in a child’s willingness to read on their own. That’s why Kids ‘R’ Kids spends quality time with children reading in all our classrooms. After a while, your child will remind you that it’s time to read.
